Mế’s Story

Every roof tile, stone wall and tree here began with one word — gratitude.

Origins

“Mế” — the sacred highland word for Mother

In the highland language of Cao Bằng, “Mế” means Mother — the first sound spoken by every child born of these cliffs. Mế Farmstay was seeded by the quiet gratitude of four sons towards a mother who sacrificed everything after their father passed away early.

“These 10,000 square metres of stone terraces and trees are a gift of thanks — a peaceful place for Mother to enjoy her old age.”

From a private gift for one mother, this place has grown into a shared home — where every child far from home, every traveller, is welcomed like family returning.

How we run Mế

Keep the old ways, live green, share with the village

Mế is run by the Pá Mế Cooperative with a team that is 100% local Tày, Nùng and Dao people — every job at Mế keeps one more family rooted in the village. Even the indigo of this website is the colour of their traditional dress.

We grow slowly and carefully: glass bottles instead of plastic, solar panels on the roofs, vegetables from our own greenhouse, home-made organic compost — and a stream kept as clear as it ever was.

Our love for Pác Bó

Grown from the land of origins

Mế stands in Nà Mạ village — home of the young hero Kim Đồng — on the road into the Pác Bó Special National Heritage Site. Raised on this “cradle of the revolution”, we see every heritage tour we host as a way of giving back to our homeland.

At Mế, travel is more than rest — it is living history, culture and highland life. See the Pác Bó guide we wrote for our guests.

Come home to Mế

Come once and hear the whole story by the kitchen fire — the tea is always warm at Mế.
