Indigo, Then melodies and mountain feasts

The Cao Bằng borderlands preserve the old ways of the Tày and Nùng: indigo dress the colour of loyalty and earth, stilt houses under yin-yang tiles, and the Then ritual — UNESCO-listed — sung to the gourd lute beside the fire.

Their food carries the same identity: five-colour sticky rice scented with forest leaves, bò khai greens, seven-flavour roast duck and slow-braised khâu nhục.

The people

Highland people — unhurried and true

In Nà Mạ, doors are seldom locked; a lost traveller is invited in for tea; weddings are cooked by the whole village and sorrows carried by it too. Mế’s team — all Tày, Nùng and Dao villagers — bring exactly that spirit to their hospitality: no scripts, just sincerity.

To understand highland people, share one meal and one fire with them — Mế will gladly make the introduction.
